Xiaomi Roborock S6 vs. S5 Max vs. S5 - Concrete differences?

The three robot vacuum cleaners Roborock S5, Roborock S5 Max, Roborock S6 are, apart from the price, very similar at first sight (see picture).

All three models shine with easy maintenance, self-charging and the ability to climb over thresholds up to 2 cm high. All three can wipe and vacuum simultaneously. So what are the differences?

Brushes

The side brushes of the S5 models are made of bristles while the side brushes of the newer Roborock S6 model are made of silicone. The main brush of the S6 is up to 250% denser compared to the main brushes of the S5 models, thus ensuring a much more thorough cleaning. In addition, the brushes and wheels on Roborock are positioned in such a way that hair is prevented from getting entangled. This protects the motor from overheating and increases the overall life of the device.

Route algorithm

The Roborock S5 Max and Roborock S6 are equipped with a 32-bit QuadCore processor. This allows the robots to calculate the most efficient route for each room. Roborock S5 Max and Roborock S6 are therefore up to 15% more efficient than Roborock S5. All three models can automatically recognise the floor plan of the apartment. The S6 and S5 Max automatically recognise rooms, so that they can be selected separately for room cleaning.

Volume

At 58dB, the Roborock S6 is quieter than the Roborock S5 (62dB) and claims to not disturb even during nighttime operation. The Roborock S5 Max (60dB) lies between the other two models in terms of volume.

Cleaning speed and area

The great strength of the Roborock S6 compared to its predecessor models is the cleaning speed. The S6 cleans up to 1.6 square metres per minute and is therefore capable of cleaning an area of 250 square metres within the maximum operating time of 150 minutes. The Roborock S5 Max and Roborock S5 only reach an area of 200 square meters within the same operating time. All three models can interupt the cleaning process to reload the battery and then continue the cleaning process.

Scheduling and Cleaning

With all three robots it is possible to determine exactly when and where the cleaning should take place by means of time scheduling and virtual walls. The models also adjust their suction power according to the surface they are working on. With Roborock S6 and S5 Max, the amount of water used for the wiping function can be varied. For this purpose, two levels can be set manually at the tank on the S6, and on the S5 Max you can even use an app to set the water supply in the "water volume setting" and also specify it for specific rooms. Overall, the S5 Max is the winner when it comes to wiping. It has more than double the capacity of the 290ml water tank and supports no-mop-zones, i.e. zones that can be set where it will not mop when the mop is installed, e.g. areas with carpets. Recently, this function was also launched for the S6 in the Roborock App. The OZMO Deebot 950 offers an even more convenient solution: it automatically detects carpets without having to draw any no-mop-zones, and avoids these areas when cleaning is in progress. The O950 also has no-mop zones, so you're not limited to carpets when excluding them.

Multi-floor cleaning:

The Roborock S6 and S5 Max offer the possibility to store up to 3 different floor plans. This is an enormous advantage compared to previous models, especially in houses with several floors. Along with a recent update in April 2020, it is now possible to explicitly store 2 maps in the Roborock App. The former version, which is still present in the Xiaomi App and in the Roborock App for the S5max, was not very user-friendly, as maps were overwritten frequently, when new cleaning runs were carried out, what caused the loss of all previously defined settings.

Conclusion - What is my decision?

People, who don't want to spend a lot of money, are well advised to take the Roborock S5. It mainly falls behind its two successor models in terms of volume, efficiency and multi-card storage. The Roborock S5 Max is quieter and, thanks to intelligent route calculation, also more efficient, but its price is already a good 75 € more than the Roborock S5. If wiping is very important to you, the S5 Max is the best choice for you, on par with the Ozmo 950 (Amazon: https://amzn.to/2SZJWkV). When it comes to vacuuming, the S5 is equivalent to the S5 Max.

The Roborock S6 is the quietest and at the same time the fastest model and promises a more thorough cleaning than the other two models because of its new cleaning brush. The main brush can be dismantled into individual parts and is well suited for animal hair. Buyers who value silence and efficiency should reach for the S6. If you intend to clean a surface on several floors, the S6 is currently the best choice, as it handles different floor plans (again on par with the Ozmo 950). With a minimum of 469.70 €, the S6 is noticeably more expensive than the other two. I personally would buy the S6.
